Radiation Oncology services in Australia are provided by both the public and private sector. Service provider clinics are typically referred to as Radiation Oncology Treatment Centres (ROTCs).
Private service providers frequently operate multiple treatment centres (e.g. the Genesis Care Group, which has centres in New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia). These ROTCs are frequently based near existing health infrastructure. The development of new ROTCs frequently involves the government issuing a call for tenders. These tenders call for the construction, operation and/or provision of equipment for a new centre. An example request for tender can be found here.
The locations of Australian radiotherapy centres can be seen in the embedded map (red for public service providers and blue for private service providers). A larger map can be found on Google Maps. A list of ROTCs is presented below the map, with information on the equipment used at each centre, where that information is available.
The most recent list of accredited departments for radiation oncology training can be found here. The federal government maintains a list of ROTCs here. A similar map can be found on the Targeting Cancer site here.
Not presented here are a number of veterinary clinics that provide radiation oncology services (see a list here). The Brisbane Veterinary Specialist Centre, for example, utilises a linear accelerator and a 3D treatment planning system. In 2011 there were 168 linear accelerators in use in Australia (RANZCR 2011). An (out-of-date) international list of accelerators can be found here.
Note: I can’t guarantee that this list is up-to-date, as new centres are opened, and as equipment is commissioned and decommissioned. Please email me any updated information.Treatment techniques recorded include Brachytherapy (LDR and HDR), Kilovoltage (SXRT and DXRT), IMRT (intensity modulated radiotherapy), VMAT (volumetric modulated arc therapy), SBRT (stereotactic body radiotherapy), SRS/SRT (stereotactic radiotherapy / radiosurgery), TBI (total body irradiation), TSET (total skin electron therapy) and IORT (intra-operative radiation therapy). The embedded spreadsheet can be found here.
